Old Orhei

Old Orhei is a limestone ridge in a loop of the Raut river, about 60 km north-east of Chisinau in Moldova, where a cave monastery, a hilltop church and the ruins of a Golden Horde town share one dramatic valley. People have lived here since the Stone Age, and the site is on Moldova's tentative list for UNESCO.

Tickets and tours: all the options

There is no single gate at Old Orhei. The ridge, the villages of Butuceni and Trebujeni and the river paths are open, and you walk around freely. A reserve ticket of 20 lei, 10 lei for students and pensioners, is sold at the information points in Butuceni and at the Belvedere viewpoint, and the monks at the cave monastery welcome a donation; occasional parking charges apply at the main car park.

The tours sold online are almost all day trips from Chisinau with transport and a guide. The common formats combine Old Orhei with the monastery at Curchi, or with a winery visit and tasting at Cricova, Chateau Vartely or Branesti, whose cellars are cut into limestone like the caves at Orhei. Some private trips include a home-cooked lunch at a guesthouse in Butuceni. Lunch and tastings are sometimes extra, so check what is covered.

Public buses reach the villages but run only a few times a day, and timetables change often, so independent visitors without a car must plan carefully. For most travellers a guided day trip from Chisinau is the most practical choice, ideally one that includes a wine cellar. Those who want more time can stay overnight in a guesthouse in Butuceni and walk the ridge at sunrise.

What to see at Old Orhei

Cave monastery

From the car park, a path climbs to the top of the cliff, where a narrow passage leads down into the cave monastery dug into the limestone, probably first in the 14th century. Inside are a small chapel, cells and icons, still in use by a few monks. At the end, a balcony opens straight onto the cliff face above the river.

Church and bell tower

Back on the ridge stands the white Church of the Ascension of the Virgin, built in 1905, with a stone bell tower and a large cross on the edge of the cliff. The view from here sweeps over the loop of the Raut river, the meadows and the village of Butuceni below, and is the classic photograph of Old Orhei.

Golden Horde town and baths

Below the ridge to the south lie the excavated foundations of Shehr al-Jedid, a town founded by the Golden Horde in the 14th century. Look for the remains of a bath house with its heating system, a caravanserai and a mosque. Paths are signed but rough; the visitor centre shows finds and a plan of the town.

Moldavian fortress and walls

Close to the Golden Horde ruins are the stone walls of the Moldavian fortress built after the Horde withdrew, part of the town of Orhei that thrived here until the 16th century. The low walls trace the outline of towers and gates. Further along the ridge, earth banks mark the Geto-Dacian fort of the last centuries BC.

Butuceni village

Finish by walking down into Butuceni, a village of blue and white painted houses with carved wooden gates set along the river. A small ethnographic museum shows traditional rooms and crafts, and several guesthouses serve lunch with local wine. From the bridge at the end of the village you can look back up at the cave monastery entrance in the cliff.

A short history

The ridge and the gorge of the Raut have been settled since the Palaeolithic, and excavations have found layers from the Copper Age and Iron Age. In the 6th to 1st centuries BC the Geto-Dacians built an earth and timber fortress here. In the 14th century the Golden Horde founded the town of Shehr al-Jedid, with baths, a mosque and a caravanserai. After the Horde withdrew, the Moldavian principality built a stone fortress and the town of Orhei, which flourished until the 16th century, when the town moved to its present site. Orthodox hermits carved cave cells into the cliffs, and inscriptions from the 1690s record outlaws sheltering inside. It is on Moldova's UNESCO tentative list.

Getting there

Old Orhei lies about 60 km north-east of Chisinau, a drive of about 1 hour by the road to Orhei and then east through Peresecina and Ivancea, following the signs for Orheiul Vechi. Parking is available near the visitor centre at Trebujeni and in Butuceni. Buses and minibuses from the central bus station in Chisinau run to Trebujeni and Butuceni a few times a day and take about 1 hour 30 minutes; check the return times before you set off. Another option is a bus to Orhei town and a taxi from there, about 20 minutes. Chisinau International Airport is about 75 km away. Taxis from Chisinau can be hired for the day at a reasonable price.

Rules and what to bring

The cave monastery is a working place of worship: women should cover their heads and wear skirts or long trousers, men should remove hats, and shorts are not allowed. Photography inside the chapel may be restricted. Keep away from the cliff edges, which are unfenced. Bring water, sturdy shoes and a hat, and some cash for the ticket and donations. Toilets are at the visitor centre.

When to go

The ridge is exposed, and on summer afternoons the heat on the limestone can be strong, so in July and August arrive in the morning or after 4 pm. Day tours from Chisinau usually arrive in the late morning and stay two to three hours, and weekends bring local families and wedding photographers, particularly in late spring and early autumn.

May and June are the best months, with green meadows along the river and wildflowers on the slopes; September and early October bring the grape harvest and wine festivals across Moldova, with the National Wine Day in early October. Winter is cold, and paths can be icy and slippery, though the snowy gorge is striking. Orthodox Easter and church feasts draw pilgrims to the monastery. Allow two to three hours for the cave, the church, the ruins and the village, and a full day if you add a winery.

Combine it with

Curchi Monastery, a large 18th-century complex in a wooded valley, is about 40 minutes north by car. Orhei town and Chateau Vartely winery are 20 minutes west. Back towards Chisinau, the underground cellars of Cricova, with tunnels stretching for tens of kilometres, make the most popular second stop of the day.
