Best ancient sites in Turkey

Turkey has more Greek and Roman cities than anywhere outside Greece and Italy, with far older and later layers too: the Stone Age pillars of Göbekli Tepe near Şanlıurfa, the mudbrick town of Çatalhöyük, the colossal heads on Mount Nemrut and medieval Armenian Ani near Kars. The Aegean holds the best-known group: Ephesus outside Selçuk, Pergamon above Bergama, Troy by the Dardanelles, and inland Aphrodisias and Hierapolis on the white terraces of Pamukkale. Antalya is the base for the second, with Aspendos, whose Roman theatre still stands to full height, Perge, Side and the mountain cities of Termessos and Selge, while the Lycian coast adds the rock-cut tombs of Myra and Tlos and the sunken town at Kekova.

Few sites need booking: tickets are paid at the gate, priced in euros, and the Museum Pass covers most of them. Heat matters more. Ephesus and Pamukkale offer little shade, so arrive at opening or after 4 pm. Mount Nemrut is climbed for sunrise or sunset, and in winter snow can close it. April to June and September to October are best.
