Country
Belize is Maya country: the catalogue’s six sites are all lowland Maya cities, from Cahal Pech, settled around 1200 BC, to Lamanai, lived in for some three thousand years. Four lie around San Ignacio in the west: Cahal Pech on the edge of town, Xunantunich across a hand-cranked ferry, El Pilar under forest on the Guatemalan border, and Caracol, the country’s largest Maya city, whose Caana pyramid is still Belize’s tallest building. In the north, Altun Ha is a half day from Belize City and Lamanai a boat ride up the New River from Orange Walk.

San Ignacio is the western base, with Tikal two hours away across the border. Caracol takes a full day on a slow road and closes in mid-afternoon, so book a tour a day or two ahead, as for the Lamanai boat. Altun Ha and Xunantunich fill from about 9 am to 1 pm on cruise-ship days. December to April is the dry season; from June to November heavy rain can close the Caracol road.
This catalogue lists 6 ruins and ancient sites in Belize, 4 of them with tickets or tours to book online. The most booked are Xunantunich, Altun Ha, Lamanai.
