Jericho’s three sites span ten thousand years. Tell es-Sultan, the mound of the ancient town on the northern edge of the city, has a Neolithic stone tower from around 8300 BC, one of the oldest monumental buildings known, set in deep excavation trenches. Hisham’s Palace, an 8th-century Umayyad residence 3 km north, keeps a bath hall floor of mosaic of about 850 square metres, with the Tree of Life panel. Qumran, by the Dead Sea, is the settlement beside the caves of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Tell es-Sultan and Hisham’s Palace are 10 minutes apart by taxi and make one morning, with the cable car to the Monastery of Temptation beside the tell. Qumran is 20 to 30 minutes south and pairs better with a Dead Sea day. Fees are small and paid at the gate. In summer the Jordan Valley is very hot, so start early.
