Saudi Arabia
The AlUla oasis in north-west Saudi Arabia holds three sites from the age of the incense road. Hegra, 20 km north of the town, was the Nabataeans’ second city after Petra and has more than 110 tombs cut into sandstone outcrops, among them the lone facade of Qasr al-Farid. Dadan, capital of the earlier Lihyanite kingdom, has a red cliff carved with tombs, some guarded by reliefs of lions. Jabal Ikmah, close by, is a canyon whose walls carry hundreds of inscriptions in the lost Dadanitic script.
