Best ancient sites in Cyprus

Cyprus lies where the Greek, Phoenician and Roman worlds met, and its sites run from the Neolithic to late antiquity. Khirokitia, a village of round stone houses founded around 7000 BC, is one of the oldest settlements in the Mediterranean; Kition under Larnaca shows Bronze Age walls and the temples of its Phoenician kings; Kourion and Salamis were Greek city-kingdoms that the Romans filled with baths, theatres and mosaics. Paphos holds two of the best: the Roman villa floors of the Archaeological Park, seen where they were laid, and the rock-cut Tombs of the Kings a short bus ride up the coast.

The sites group easily along the south coast: Paphos and Kourion from the west, Khirokitia and Kition from Larnaca. Salamis lies in the north near Famagusta, across the Green Line, so bring your passport and allow half a day. Nothing needs booking. Heat matters most: from June to September the open sites pass 35 degrees with little shade, so come at opening or in the last two hours, when Kourion’s theatre faces the sunset.
