Best ancient sites in Greece

Greece covers almost every chapter of the ancient Aegean: Minoan palaces on Crete, the Bronze Age citadel of Mycenae, the classical sanctuaries of Olympia and Epidaurus, the Macedonian capitals of Philip and Alexander, and Roman Athens. The catalogue’s 34 sites cluster in Athens (the Acropolis, the Ancient and Roman Agoras), the Peloponnese (Mycenae, Epidaurus, Corinth, Messene, Olympia), Crete (Knossos, Phaistos, Malia), the north (Vergina, Pella, Dion, Philippi) and the islands: Delos off Mykonos, Akrotiri on Santorini, Lindos on Rhodes.

Book the Acropolis, whose timed hourly slots sell out days ahead in season, and take 8 am or the last two hours. Boats to Delos stop in strong wind, so buy the crossing from Mykonos a day ahead in summer. Elsewhere you pay at the gate. State sites open about 8 am to 8 pm from April to October and close mid-afternoon in winter, when many tickets are half price; all shut on 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Orthodox Easter Sunday and 25 and 26 December. Shade is scarce, so April, May and October beat July and August.
