Country
Portugal’s ancient sites belong mostly to Roman Lusitania, with a prehistoric layer older and further north. Conimbriga, south of Coimbra, is the largest and most rewarding: a walled town with baths, a forum and mosaic floors, where water still plays in the garden of the House of the Fountains. Ammaia lies in a quiet valley below the hilltop village of Marvao, Troia across the water from Setubal was a great fish-salting works, and Cerro da Vila sits beside the marina at Vilamoura. Older still are the Great Dolmen of Zambujeiro near Evora and Citania de Briteiros, an Iron Age hill town of round stone houses near Guimaraes.

These sites are spread across the country, so they suit a road trip rather than a base: Briteiros with Guimaraes and Braga, Conimbriga with Coimbra, Zambujeiro with Evora, Ammaia with Marvao, Cerro da Vila with the Algarve. None needs booking. Troia opens mainly from spring to autumn, reached by ferry from Setubal. In the Alentejo summer heat is hard on the open sites, so April to June and September to October are best.
