Best ancient sites in Plovdiv

Plovdiv has been lived in for six thousand years, and its ancient sites sit inside the working city. Nebet Tepe, the rocky hill at the north of the Old Town, is where it began, ringed by Thracian, Roman and Byzantine walls and giving the best view over the Maritsa. The Roman theatre of Philippopolis, cut into the hillside below, is one of the best preserved anywhere and still hosts opera and concerts. The stadium of Hadrian’s time lies under the main pedestrian street, with only its curved end exposed on Dzhumaya Square.

See the theatre first, then walk ten minutes up to Nebet Tepe and back down to the stadium: all three are close on foot. Nebet Tepe and the stadium are free to see, and the theatre costs a few euros. In summer book an evening performance in the theatre, and check before a day visit, as it closes for rehearsals and events.
