Ancient sites near Split

Split is built inside a Roman ruin: Diocletian's Palace is the old town, free to walk in at any hour, with tickets only for the cathedral, bell tower and cellars. Salona, the Roman capital of Dalmatia, lies 5 km away in Solin, about 25 minutes on city bus 1, and is rarely crowded even in August. The Roman forum in Zadar, 119 km north, is around an hour and a half by motorway or bus. Walk the palace before 9 am, ahead of the cruise passengers and tour groups.
