Two ancient sites in Nativitas. Cacaxtla has 2 tickets and tours to book; Xochitecatl has 1 ticket or tour to book. The table and the two notes below put them side by side; the full pages have what to see, the ticket and the timing for each.
Cacaxtla is a hilltop palace city in the state of Tlaxcala, near Puebla in central Mexico, famous for murals painted between about AD 650 and 900. Under a vast modern roof on its main platform you see life-size warriors, a bird man and a jaguar man in vivid colour, mixing central Mexican and Maya styles in a way found nowhere else.
Xochitecatl is a ceremonial centre on the summit of an extinct volcano in the state of Tlaxcala, begun around 800 BC, long before the cities of the Classic period. Its Pyramid of Flowers has a base of about 100 by 140 metres, and the hilltop gives views of Popocatepetl, Iztaccihuatl and La Malinche. Cacaxtla and its painted murals lie 1 km away.
