Two ancient sites in Plovdiv. Nebet Tepe has no online ticket listed; Ancient Theatre of Plovdiv has no online ticket listed. The table and the two notes below put them side by side; the full pages have what to see, the ticket and the timing for each.
Nebet Tepe is the rocky hill at the northern edge of Plovdiv Old Town where the city began, settled since about 4000 BC. Thracian, Macedonian, Roman and Byzantine walls ring its summit, including cyclopean masonry of the 4th century BC and a rock-cut postern. It is free and gives the best view over the Maritsa river.
The Ancient Theatre of Plovdiv is one of the best preserved Roman theatres anywhere, built in the 1st century AD for the city of Philippopolis and still used for concerts and opera. Its marble seats curve down a hillside of the Old Town, with a view south to the Rhodope Mountains. It was only rediscovered in the late 1960s.
