Two ancient sites in Peru. Ollantaytambo has 87 tickets and tours to book; Chinchero has 70 tickets and tours to book. The table and the two notes below put them side by side; the full pages have what to see, the ticket and the timing for each.
Ollantaytambo is an Inca royal estate and fortress at the western end of the Sacred Valley, 2,792 metres above sea level. Steep farming terraces climb to a temple built from huge blocks of pink stone hauled across the valley. Below it lies a village still laid out on its Inca street grid, the departure point for trains to Machu Picchu.
Chinchero is an Andean weaving village and Inca royal estate on a high plateau 3,754 metres above sea level, between Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Broad Inca terraces fall below a colonial church built on palace walls, painted inside with flowers and saints. On Sundays the square fills with a market, and weaving cooperatives demonstrate natural dyes.
