Near a city
Izmir itself has one ancient site, the Agora of Smyrna in the Konak quarter above the Kemeralti bazaar, a quiet hour most visitors skip. The big draw is Ephesus, 56 km south: trains run from the city and the airport to Selcuk in about an hour and a quarter, then a taxi covers the last 3 km. Pergamon, above Bergama to the north, is about 1 hour 45 minutes by bus. Both are open, exposed sites, so in summer go at opening or after 4 pm.
