Ancient sites near Sofia

Sofia's own entry is the Amphitheatre of Serdica, shown free in a hotel lobby on Budapeshta Street, ten minutes' walk from Serdika metro and good for a wet day. The rest take a long day: Plovdiv's Roman stadium, Roman theatre and the hilltop of Nebet Tepe lie close together in its old town, two to two and a half hours away by train or bus. Kokino, a Bronze Age observatory in North Macedonia, needs a car and a passport. In Plovdiv, check the theatre is not closed for a rehearsal or event.
