El Lahun Pyramid of Senusret II vs Karanis (Kom Aushim)
Two ancient sites in Faiyum. El Lahun Pyramid of Senusret II has no online ticket listed; Karanis (Kom Aushim) has no online ticket listed. The table and the two notes below put them side by side; the full pages have what to see, the ticket and the timing for each.
The pyramid of Senusret II at El Lahun, at the entrance to the Faiyum, was built for a pharaoh of the 12th Dynasty in the early 19th century BC. Its mudbrick core rises around a natural rock outcrop to about 48 metres, and since 2019 visitors can go down into the passages and the granite burial chamber. Few tourists come, so you usually have it to yourself.
Karanis is the mud-brick ruin of a Ptolemaic and Roman farming town on the north-eastern edge of the Faiyum Oasis, about 75 km south-west of Cairo. It covered roughly 60 hectares and kept two limestone temples to crocodile gods, streets of collapsed houses and a small museum, and it sees very few foreign visitors.
