Caracol, on the Vaca Plateau, has the Caana pyramid, at 43 metres still the tallest building in the country. Lamanai is approached by boat up the New River and has giant stucco masks below its High Temple. Xunantunich, across a hand-cranked ferry near the Guatemalan border, has a carved frieze on El Castillo. Altun Ha is the easiest from Belize City, and Cahal Pech is a short walk from San Ignacio. Base yourself in San Ignacio for the west and go in the dry months, December to April.
