Knossos, south of Heraklion, is the largest and the only one with painted rooms, the Throne Room and the Grand Staircase, though much of it was rebuilt in concrete by Arthur Evans. Phaistos, above the Messara plain, is unrestored and quieter, with one of the finest views on the island; Malia, near the north-coast resorts, is the easiest to read, with round granaries and giant storage jars. The original frescoes are in the Heraklion museum, so pair it with Knossos and reach the palace at 8 am.
