Oldest ancient sites in Jordan

Jordan's list is short, and its dates need careful reading. The Amman Citadel was fortified around 1800 BC and has Neolithic traces, but most of what stands on the hill is the Roman Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad palace. Petra is dated to the Nabataean settlement of the fourth century BC, while its best-known rock-cut facades are later, from around the turn of the eras. Jerash takes its traditional founding under Alexander in 331 BC, and the Roman Theatre of Amman dates from the reign of Antoninus Pius.
