Jordan’s ancient sites come from two cultures that overlapped. The Nabataeans, Arab traders of the incense routes, carved Petra into the southern sandstone from around the 4th century BC: a long gorge, the Treasury at its end and a valley of tombs beyond. Little Petra, 8 km north, is their smaller canyon of rock-cut houses. The Romans left Jerash, ancient Gerasa, one of the best-preserved provincial towns of the empire, and in Amman the Temple of Hercules on the Citadel and the steep theatre of Philadelphia below it.

The sites form two clusters. Amman’s Citadel and Roman Theatre face each other across downtown, and Jerash is 48 km north, an easy half day. Petra and Little Petra lie near Wadi Musa, three hours south; give Petra a full day, two if you can, and enter at 6 am in summer, before the heat. The Jordan Pass covers the four ticketed sites (Little Petra is free), and Petra costs JOD 90 for visitors who do not stay a night in Jordan. March to May and October to November are the best months.
