Sacsayhuamán above Cusco has zigzag terraces of stones weighing well over 100 tonnes. Kuelap, in the northern cloud forest, is the walled Chachapoya city of more than 400 round houses, reached by cable car; Waqrapukara is a horn-shaped fortress-sanctuary above the Apurímac canyon, a long drive and hike from Cusco. All three sit high, Waqrapukara above 4,000 metres, so acclimatise first and go in the dry season, May to October.
