Highest ancient sites in Peru

Altitude here is the elevation of the site itself, and in Peru it matters for planning more than any other figure. Waqrapukara, a hike-in Inca and pre-Inca site in Acomayo province, a long drive from Cusco, is the highest at about 4,300 m. Sacsayhuaman, at 3,701 m, sits above Cusco, so it is no first-morning walk. Pisac's terraces at 3,446 m tower over their town, while Ollantaytambo (2,792 m) and Machu Picchu (2,430 m) are much lower than Cusco, which is why many visitors acclimatise in the Sacred Valley first.
