Europe

Oldest ancient sites in Europe

Most of the oldest entries in Europe are Neolithic stones rather than cities. Khirokitia in Cyprus, a village of round houses from c. 7000 BC, comes first, followed by Nebet Tepe in Plovdiv, whose c. 4000 BC is the earliest settlement layer beneath Thracian and later walls. Then come the megalith builders: the Poulnabrone dolmen and Carrowmore in Ireland, Ġgantija and Ħaġar Qim on Malta from c. 3600 BC. The c. 3100 BC given for Stonehenge dates the first ditch and bank; the sarsen circle came about five centuries later.
